Intermediate Readers
Your student gets the basics, but is struggling to read, write or comprehend at grade level. They may lack fluency, struggle with lower than expected accuracy or reading grade level vocabulary. They may not be able to fully understand what they are reading or express what they know in writing. This student is typically 3rd grade or older, falling behind typical peers 1 to 2 years in their reading and writing skills.

Multi-syllable Decoding and Morphology
Multi-syllabic decoding begins at the foundational level, but as vocabulary and content becomes more challenging, so do the phonics and morphology patterns. Your student will work to decode complex patterns within multi-syllable words with fluency in order to increase comprehension and written expression.
Written Expression
During decoding and morphology instruction, your reader will not only improve their decoding, but their encoding as well. Your student will practice all complex multi-syllabic patterns through both reading and writing, and move into writing composition skills support through the explicit and scaffolded Writing Without Tears model.
Fluency
In order to comprehend what we read, it is necessary to read with accuracy, speed and proper inflection or expression. Readers who repeat, struggle to sound out or read with a flat affect lose meaning. Increasing fluency through repeated practice, phrase recognition and increasing visual processing and visual short term memory, increases comprehension.
Vocabulary
As students progress through the grades, instruction becomes less based on learning how to learn, and more focused on content specific skills and knowledge. Vocabulary becomes more challenging, complex and cross-content interrelated. Morphology instruction including Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes increases vocabulary comprehension.
Comprehension
Your student will engage in explicit instruction of comprehension strategies and skills to build habits of engagement with text. Beginning with instructional program material, moving into areas of interest and incorporating grade level content material, your reader will encounter a variety of text to practice generalizing learned skills.
