The Science of Reading
“The science of reading” is a huge body of knowledge compiled on how the brain and person go about learning to read and write. While the long time debate has been the phonics vs. whole language approaches, educators are taking more notice of the huge body of knowledge available about the developmental and cognitive functions of the brain and how they affect learning to read. The science of reading are brain based understandings and approaches that start with the learning medium, the brain. Literacy instructors are becoming more aware of and developing a deeper understanding of how brain processes such as working memory and auditory processing affect the ability to learn to read.
